The talk
The talk is given in French. Most teams treat data backups as a solved problem, until a bad migration, a corrupted volume or a failed deployment forces a restore that was never really tested. The tools exist, but they are fragmented and hard to run without DBA expertise.
Portabase is a 100% open-source platform, under the Apache 2.0 license, for backing up, restoring and migrating data. A central server orchestrates lightweight agents deployed close to the data, without exposing it to the internet. Portabase supports PostgreSQL, MySQL, MariaDB, Microsoft SQL Server, MongoDB, SQLite, Redis, Valkey, Docker volumes and files.
The session gives a focused overview of how Portabase works, followed by a live demo: deploying an agent, scheduling a backup and restoring it on stage. Simple, reproducible, no black magic.
Who is it for? Developers, DevOps and platform engineers, SME CTOs, self-hosting administrators and teams running databases without a dedicated DBA.
Outline
- 1Why backups are unreliable: drifting cron jobs, untested dumps, no off-site copy
- 2Portabase: architecture and design choices, agents, storage, retention and notifications
- 3Live demo: registering an agent, a scheduled PostgreSQL backup, a restore on stage, a migration from PostgreSQL 17 to 18
- 4The project: roadmap and how to contribute
- 5Key takeaways, then questions
Takeaways
What to remember
- 1
A backup is valid only if it has already been restored.
- 2
Your backup tool does not need direct access to your data.
- 3
No vendor lock-in: backups stay readable without the tool that created them.
